After one year of NCAA play, Andrew Wiggins has officially announced he is headed to the NBA.
The 6-foot-8 Kansas forward made his announcement Monday during a news conference at Allen Fieldhouse. He was joined by his parents, former NBA player Mitchell Wiggins and Olympic silver medalist Marita Payne Wiggins, his older brother, Kansas head coach Bill Self and several of his Jayhawks teammates.
“It wasn’t an easy decision because the fans showed me so much love here,” Wiggins said during the press conference. “I just wish I had more time. College goes by so fast. I can see why people stay all four years.”
Wiggins was the top-rated recruit when he made his college debut with Kansas. Although he had a strong season, he failed to lead the Jayhawks past the third-round of the NCAA tournament when they lost to Stanford in a 60-57 upset.
Although Wiggins averaged 17.1 points per game in the regular season, he managed to squeak out a mere four points against Stanford.
Despite the March Madness disappointment, Wiggins is projected as a top-three pick in the NBA Draft. Wiggins fans have until June to see where the AP’s Big 12 Freshman of the Year will land.
