Kevin GarnettKevin Garnett will not travel with the rest of his Brooklyn Nets teammates to play the Boston Celtics on Friday.

Garnett will sit out against Boston with back spasms that have already kept the former Celtic out for three games, according to The Associated Press.

“It’s tough for him,” Paul Pierce told the Brooklyn media on Wednesday night. “We had a chance to see him get out on the (practice) court, do some extra stuff (Wednesday at shootaround). But he’s a competitor. He hates to sit out. But the good thing about it, we need him to get his rest so he can come back full strength.”

Garnett made his emotional return to Boston in January. The Celtics honored Garnett and teammate Paul Pierce with touching video tributes. Fans responded to Garnett and Pierce’s return with extended standing ovations.

Garnett is averaging 6.7 points and 6.7 rebounds in 21 minutes this season.
