1394402914_mattForward Matt Stajan is taking an indefinite leave of absence following the death of his newborn son, Emerson, the Calgary Flames announced Sunday.

Stajan has been out of the lineup for the past four games for Calgary, and the tragic explanation for his absence was explained today.

“It is with great sadness we inform that Katie and Matt Stajan are grieving the loss of their son, Emerson Stajan,” the statement read. “Emerson passed away Monday, March 3, 2014, following childbirth.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with Katie and Matt at this difficult time. We appreciate that everyone has and will continue to respect their privacy during this period.”

Stajan, who signed a four-year extension with the Flames earlier this year, has 10 goals and 13 assists through 52 games this season.
