Hockey East will be well represented when play begins in Worcester for the Northeast regional bracket in the 2014 NCAA hockey tournament.
The No. 1 seed Boston College Eagles face off against Denver at 4 p.m. on Saturday. No. 2 UMass Lowell will take on Minnesota State-Mankato following the BC-Denver game, with the puck set to drop at 7:30 p.m.
Boston College will look to continue its dominance in the school’s fifth consecutive appearance in the tournament, while Lowell hopes to ride the momentum of its second straight Hockey East championship. The River Hawks haven’t allowed a goal in over 122 minutes thanks to stellar play from goaltender Connor Hellebuyck.
Minnesota State won’t be an easy opponent for Lowell, however, as they’re enjoying a 13-game unbeaten streak as well as a conference championship of their own. Denver and Boston College haven’t faced each other since 2011, and each team boasts a wealth of talent. The Pioneers roster features seven NHL prospects, while the Eagles top line has been absolutely lethal all year and features Hockey East’s player of the year, Johnny Gaudreau.
The winners of each matchup will square off on Sunday at 5 p.m. for a berth in the Frozen Four in Philadelphia. The semifinal games will be played on Thursday, April 10 while the national championship game is set for Saturday, April 12 at 7:30 p.m.
