The Mets have signed 40-year-old outfielder Bobby Abreu to a minor league contract, the team announced Monday night.

Abreu, who last appeared in the majors with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2012, hit .244 with 2 RBI in 17 games with the Phillies during spring training. The Phillies announced he would not be on the Opening Day roster and Abreu was released one day later. Abreu originally played for the Phillies from 1998-2003. It was during that stint that he was named to the the 2004 All-Star team and reached his career-high batting average of .335 in 1999. He also won a Gold Glove in 2005.
The Venezuelan native has played for the Houston Astros, New York Yankees, Los Angeles Angels and Los Angeles Dodgers throughout his career.
Abreu will report to Las Vegas, where he will join the Mets’ Triple-A affiliate team, the Las Vegas 51s.
One day after the team announced that Abreu wouldn’t make the opening day 25-man roster, they have released the 40-year-old outfielder.
“Bobby is going to pursue opportunities with another club so we will go ahead and give him his release,” general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said. “I hope it works out for him and he continues to play.”
This spring Abreu hit .244 but had a .404 on base percentage. His struggles on defense appeared to seal his fate.
