NFL Bans Players Dunking Football Over Goal Posts

New Orleans Saints tight end Jimmy Graham will need to find a new touchdown celebration.

NFL head of officiating Dean Blandino told “The Dan Patrick Show” Tuesday that the NFL will penalize players who dunk the football over the goal post next season. Dunking is using the football as a prop, which already has been banned. Dunking previously was grandfathered into the rules.

The dunking ban could stem from Graham bending the goal posts and creating a delay during the Saints’ Week 12 win over the Atlanta Falcons.

At least one NFL tight end is upset over the new rule.

Tony Gonzalez, who started the popular celebration by channeling his basketball-playing days, also was disappointed to see the end of goal post dunks.
