Notre Dame Upsets Boston College, Advances To Hockey East Semifinals


1395017705_notreNotre Dame upset top-seeded Boston College 4-2 Sunday afternoon at Conte Forum and advanced to the semifinals of the Hockey East tournament in its first season in the league.

Senior forward Bryan Rust scored with four seconds remaining in the second period to propel the eighth-seeded Irish to the decisive Game 3 win. Notre Dame also held Boston College standout Johnny Gaudreau, who leads Division I men’s hockey in scoring, scoreless on the day. Notre Dame will face No. 2 UMass Lowell in the semifinals Friday at TD Garden.

The River Hawks earned a 2-1 victory over No. 7-seeded Vermont on Sunday to take the series in three games. Sophomore goaltender Connor Hellebuyck made 30 saves, and Christian Folin and A.J. White each had one goal for UMass Lowell.

In other Sunday action, fourth-seeded New Hampshire moved past No. 5 Northeastern 5-4 and will face No. 3 Providence, which swept the University of Maine, in the semifinals. Kevin Goumas netted a hat trick for the Wildcats, and Nick Sorkin and Brett Pesce each chipped in one goal.

Both semifinal games and Saturday’s championship game will be broadcast by NESN.
