Final, Phillies 4-1: Shawn Camp surrendered a two-out single to Christian Vazquez, but otherwise didn’t have any trouble closing this game out in the ninth inning.
The Phillies used a three-run fifth inning to launch themselves to victory Saturday. Burke Badenhop surrendered all three runs of that fifth while yielding four hits.
Jonny Gomes provided Boston’s only offense via a solo blast in the seventh inning. Dustin Pedroia collected two hits.
Cliff Lee pitched five shutout innings for Philadelphia, and Jon Lester countered with four solid frames of his own. Lester gave up one run on two hits while striking out five and walking one. The Red Sox ace threw 68 pitches (44 strikes).
Mid 9th, Phillies 4-1: The Phillies couldn’t take advantage of Bobby Abreu’s one-out double in the ninth inning.
Edward Mujica worked around Abreu’s double to toss a scoreless inning. He capped his outing by striking out Cesar Hernandez looking.
End 8th, Phillies 4-1: Brad Lincoln used a double play to successfully navigate through the eighth inning.
Brandon Snyder led off with a walk, but Lincoln quickly erased any potential threat by getting Grady Sizemore to ground into a tailor-made, 4-6-3 double play.
Mookie Betts grounded to his second base counterpart to end the inning.
Edward Mujica will be the new Boston pitcher in the ninth inning.
Mid 8th, Phillies 4-1: Chris Capuano has been in total control during his three innings of work.
Capuano enjoyed another 1-2-3 inning in the eighth, making it nine straight hitters retired by the veteran southpaw.
Capuano struck out Jimmy Rollins to begin the eighth inning, and then induced two more ground ball outs to cap the frame. Marlon Byrd grounded to second baseman Mookie Betts, and John Mayberry grounded to shortstop Mike McCoy.
End 7th, Phillies 4-1: Jonny Gomes put the Red Sox on the scoreboard in the seventh inning with a solo homer over everything in left field.
Gomes absolutely crushed Phillippe Aumont’s offering to left field. There was absolutely no doubt about it.
Gomes’ blast kicked off the bottom of the seventh, and Daniel Nava looked to build on it by singling into right field.
Aumont, to his credit, settled back down to end the inning without any additional damage inflicted. Xander Bogaerts flied out to center field, and A.J. Pierzynski bounced into a 4-6-3, inning-ending double play.
Mid 7th, Phillies 4-0: Chris Capuano has retired all six hitters he has faced.
Capuano induced three straight ground ball outs in the seventh inning. That includes a comebacker that Capuano handled before tossing over to first baseman Daniel Nava to complete the out.
Matty Johnson replaced Shane Victorino in right field and Mookie Betts replaced Dustin Pedroia at second base before the inning.
End 6th, Phillies 4-0: Cliff Lee’s night ended after five solid innings. Phillippe Aumont took over in the sixth inning and picked up right where Lee left off.
Shane Victorino, Dustin Pedroia and David Ortiz went down in order against Aumont. Two flyouts sandwiched Pedroia’s popout to third baseman Maikel Franco.
Mid 6th, Phillies 4-0: Chris Capuano was effective in his first inning of work.
Capuano retired the side in order in the sixth inning. The left-hander induced a couple of ground ball outs before striking out Kevin Frandsen to end the inning.
End 5th, Phillies 4-0: Cliff Lee has given the Phillies five strong innings in his spring tune-up.
Lee tossed a 1-2-3 fifth after the Phillies posted three runs in the top half of the inning.
A.J. Pierzynski and Grady Sizemore grounded out in the fifth inning. Brandon Snyder flied out.
Chris Capuano will take over on the hill for Boston in the sixth.
Mid 5th, Phillies 4-0: Burke Badenhop struggled in the fifth inning as the Phillies added three runs.
Cesar Hernandez was the first Phillies hitter to reach safely in the fifth. Hernandez hit a soft ground ball to the left side that Brandon Snyder fielded. The play took a while to develop, though, and Hernandez beat out Snyder’s throw to first base.
Wil Nieves followed with a single into right field on a perfectly executed hit-and-run. Dustin Pedroia darted toward second base with Hernandez off on the pitch, and Nieves used the gaping hole that materialized on the right side as a result of the hit-and-run.
Ben Revere drove in Philadelphia’s second run with a blooper down the left field line. The ball dropped in fair territory and bounced up into the seats, allowing Hernandez to trot home from third base.
Jimmy Rollins knocked in the Phillies’ third run with a ground ball to short. Xander Bogaerts knocked it down, but Nieves, who was off on contact, easily scored.
Marlon Byrd added one more tally with a single into center field.
End 4th, Phillies 1-0: The Red Sox made some noise in the fourth inning before Cliff Lee squashed Boston’s rally bid.
Dustin Pedroia led off with a high fly ball to deep center field. Ben Revere raced back toward the wall but couldn’t make the grab. The ball bounced off Revere’s glove as the Phillies center fielder banged into the wall, and Pedroia cruised into second base with a double.
Pedroia advanced to third base with one out when David Ortiz hit a little check-swing chopper down to first base. Pedey would get stranded at third.
Jonny Gomes struck out looking on a pitch the slugger seemingly thought was low. Xander Bogaerts grounded to shortstop for the inning’s third out after Daniel Nava’s two-out walk put runners at the corners for the 21-year-old.
Burke Badenhop will be the new Boston pitcher in the fifth inning.
Mid 4th, Phillies 1-0: Jon Lester again took care of business in the fourth inning.
Lester struck out two while working a perfect fourth frame. Domonic Brown went down looking and Darin Ruf struck out swinging.
Lester was forced to field his position to finish off the fourth inning. The lefty’s toss to first base actually was in the dirt, but Daniel Nava did a nice job of corralling it.
That could be the night for Lester. If so, it was another strong performance by the Red Sox ace.
End 3rd, Phillies 1-0: Cliff Lee is doing as Cliff Lee typically does. The left-hander has been rolling right along since finding his way into some first-inning trouble.
Lee retired the side in order in the third inning. Brandon Snyder struck out swinging, Grady Sizemore grounded to third base and Shane Victorino flied to right field.
Sizemore shattered his bat while grounding out.
Mid 3rd, Phillies 1-0: Jimmy Rollins worked his way into scoring position in the third inning, but the Phillies couldn’t add to their one-run lead.
J-Roll walked with two outs after Wil Nieves struck out and Ben Revere grounded out. Rollins then swiped second base, testing what manager John Farrell described before the game as an “adequate” throwing arm on catcher A.J. Pierzynski.
Marlon Byrd, who doubled home Philadelphia’s lone run in the first inning, popped out to first baseman Daniel Nava in foul territory for the third out.
End 2nd, Phillies 1-0: Cliff Lee matched Jon Lester by working a 1-2-3 second inning as well.
Lee easily handled Daniel Nava, Xander Bogaerts and A.J. Pierzynski in the second.
Nava flied out to right field, Bogaerts struck out looking and Pierzynski hit a lazy pop fly to third baseman Kevin Frandsen in foul territory.
Mid 2nd, Phillies 1-0: The second inning was much smoother for Jon Lester.
Lester enjoyed a quick, 1-2-3 inning. Bobby Abreu (yes, that Bobby Abreu), Kevin Frandsen and Cesar Hernandez went down in order against the Boston lefty.
Abreu flied out to Jonny Gomes in the left field corner, Frandsen hit a routine chopper to Dustin Pedroia at second base and Hernandez struck out hacking.
End 1st, Phillies 1-0: The Red Sox stranded two runners in the first inning — including one at third base.
Grady Sizemore led off with a single back up the middle. Sizemore continues to have a strong spring, and it’ll really be interesting to see what the Red Sox do regarding their center field situation if things stay on the current path.
Dustin Pedroia singled two batters later to give Boston runners at first and second with one out. Sizemore then tagged up and advanced to third base when David Ortiz just got under one and flied out to center field.
Jonny Gomes couldn’t cash in with runners at the corners. He grounded to shortstop Jimmy Rollins, who nonchalantly tossed to second base for an inning-ending forceout.
Mid 1st, Phillies 1-0: Jon Lester, who was extremely sharp in his spring debut Monday, surrendered a run on two hits in the first inning of this contest.
Ben Revere shot a single through the left side, and subsequently stole second base with Marlon Byrd batting with one out. Revere got a pretty good jump, but swiped the bag easily because A.J. Pierzynski dropped the baseball while transferring it to his throwing hand.
Revere scored when Byrd doubled down the left field line. The ball kicked off the wall in foul territory and darted back out onto the outfield grass, enabling Revere to score easily from second base.
Domonic Brown struck out swinging and Darin Ruf flied out to right field to end the inning.
7:09 p.m.: Jon Lester deals Ben Revere a first-pitch strike, and we’re officially up and running at JetBlue Park.
6:45 p.m.: I’ve got some pregame notes to pass along.
-Manager John Farrell said Saturday that the Red Sox entered spring training with Jackie Bradley Jr. as their projected starting center fielder. Things haven’t radically changed, but Grady Sizemore’s steady progress has generated some competition. Now, the starting job seemingly is up for grabs.
-General manager Ben Cherington spoke with reporters about the arrest of Red Sox prospect Jon Denney. Cherington said Denney will enter a program to work on some problems.
-Will Middlebrooks is not in the lineup because of a jammed right middle finger. The Red Sox are just being cautious, and Middlebrooks is expected to return Sunday or Monday.
-Jon Lester is scheduled to face the New York Yankees in his next start.
-There’s a report going around stating that Tigers shortstop (and former Red Sox infielder) Jose Iglesias will miss most of the 2014 season. That news could impact Stephen Drew’s free agency.

4:30 p.m. ET: The Boston Red Sox, winners of five of their last six spring training games, will host the Philadelphia Phillies at JetBlue Park on Saturday.
Jon Lester and Cliff Lee will square off in a battle of two premier left-handers. Lester made his spring training debut Monday and appeared to be in midseason form, striking out four over three one-hit innings.
Shane Victorino, who was scratched from a minor league game Friday, will suit up to face his former club Saturday. Victorino took batting practice at JetBlue Park on Friday despite being scratched from the minor league contest.
