The New England Patriots might have to outspend the Washington Redskins if they want to re-sign free agent cornerback Aqib Talib.
The Redskins are expected to be “a major player” for Talib, according to Bleacher Report analyst and former NFL quarterback Chris Simms. As Simms notes, Redskins defensive backs coach Raheem Morris tutored Talib while the two were with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2008 to 2011. Morris was the Bucs’ defensive backs coach in 2008 and head coach from 2009 to 2011.
The Redskins have plenty of cap room and deep pockets, so the Patriots might have to rely on Talib taking a “hometown discount” to stay in New England.
Talib signed a one-year, $5 million contract with the Patriots last offseason. After staying out of trouble, he’s set to earn a similar contract to the one cornerback Brent Grimes signed with the Miami Dolphins last week worth $32 million over four years with $16 million guaranteed.
