The New England Patriots could find out what they have in defensive lineman Armond Armstead this season.
Armstead is “on track” to participate in the Patriots’ offseason program that begins April 21, the Boston Herald reports. Armstead missed last season after undergoing surgery to treat an undisclosed infection during the summer.
Armstead participated in rookie minicamp, organized team activities and minicamp, but he was sidelined for the start of training camp. He was spotted in the Patriots’ locker room numerous times during the season after being placed on the non-football illness list.
Armstead went undrafted out of USC in 2012 after suffering a heart attack. He latched on with the CFL’s Toronto Argonauts and was named a league All-Star. Armstead signed with the Patriots in January 2013.
Armstead played defensive tackle and defensive end at USC and with the Argonauts. He was expected to boost the Patriots’ interior pass rush in 2013 before he got shut down for the season. He’s signed through 2015.
