The New England Patriots found a more-than-ample replacement for Aqib Talib.
The Patriots and three-time All-Pro cornerback Darrelle Revis agreed to a one-year, $12 million contract, league sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Revis’ business manager, John Geiger, tweeted shortly after: “As of now, nothing has been agreed to with Revis and Patriots.”
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers released Revis on Wednesday after they couldn’t find a trade partner. Revis is a five-time Pro Bowl selection, was the 2009 AFC Defensive Player of the Year and is widely known as one of the best defensive players in the NFL.
Revis’ annual salary with the Bucs was $16 million before he was released. Talib signed a six-year, $57 million contract with the Denver Broncos on Wednesday, so the Patriots got a steal by signing Revis for just $2 million more in annual value.
UPDATE: NFL Media’s Albert Breer reported that Revis’ deal doesn’t contain any language preventing the Patriots from using the franchise tag on the cornerback in 2015.
UPDATE: Revis’ agent, John Geiger, tweeted Wednesday morning that the cornerback has officially agreed to terms with the Patriots.
