Report: NFL Might Test Longer Extra Point During 2014 Preseason Games

Stephen Gostkowski, Ryan MallettThe extra point might not be so automatic during 2014 NFL preseason games.

The NFL Competition Committee has discussed testing longer extra point attempts during the preseason, a member told NFL.com’s Judy Battista. The ball would be placed at the 25-yard line, making it a 42-yard attempt. Extra points are currently tried from the 2-yard line, where kickers are 99.6-percent successful. Kicks between 40 and 49 yards were converted 83 percent of the time in 2013.

“There is no consensus yet,” the committee member told Battista. “We could experiment in preseason, but we are not there yet.”

Moving back the extra point would encourage teams to attempt two-point conversions from the 2-yard line, which are typically 50 percent successful. Kicking from the 25-yard line would eliminate the fake extra point two-point conversion.
