brandon lafellThe New England Patriots are hosting a potential Julian Edelman replacement.

Free-agent wide receiver Brandon LaFell will visit the Patriots on Wednesday, a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

LaFell, a third-round draft pick out of LSU in 2010, spent his first four NFL seasons with the Carolina Panthers, catching a career-high 49 passes for 627 yards with five touchdowns in 2013.

The 6-foot-2, 210-pound target has been a consistent contributor in the Panthers’ offense, averaging 639 receiving yards over the past three seasons.

Edelman, the Patriots’ top receiver last season, could not come to a new contract agreement with the team before free agency opened Tuesday afternoon. New England reportedly offered him a three-year deal.
