Julian EdelmanThe New England Patriots reportedly have extended a contract offer to one of their most important soon-to-be free agents.

NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport reported Tuesday morning, citing a source, that the Patriots have offered wide receiver Julian Edelman a three-year contract.

The team would like to keep Edelman, according to Rapoport, but also would like to have an answer from the wideout by the time NFL free agency opens at 4 p.m. ET Tuesday.

Danny Amendola battled injuries and the Patriots’ corps of rookie receivers failed to find a consistent rhythm, but Edelman had a career year in 2013, shattering his career highs in catches (105), receiving yards (1,056) and touchdowns (six). His breakout campaign will make him a very attractive option for teams if he and the Patriots cannot come to a contract agreement.

The Cleveland Browns are among the teams interested in Edelman, according to multiple reports.
