Report: Patriots’ Proposal To Raise Goal-Post Height Likely To Be OK’d

Matt Chatham is ready to celebrate. It appears NFL goal posts finally are being raised.

The New England Patriots’ proposal to raise goal-post height by 5 feet is expected to pass Wednesday at the NFL Annual Meeting, a league source told NFL Media’s Judy Battista.

The change will eliminate doubt on field goals and extra points kicked high and to the far left and right of the uprights.

There was some doubt on Justin Tucker’s game-winning field goal in a Baltimore Ravens victory over the Patriots two seasons ago. The 27-yard field goal traveled directly over the right goal post. A raised goal post would have eliminated any doubt whether or not the field-goal try was good.

Patriots head coach Bill Belichick told reporters Tuesday during the AFC coaches breakfast in Orlando, Fla., that the current goal-post height is outdated because even college kickers can kick the football over the uprights.
