The University of Texas product played the last five seasons with Chicago. Melton was given the franchise tag by the Bears last year, but only appeared in 3 games before suffering a torn left anterior cruciate ligament against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

In addition to the Cowboys, Melton also visited the St. Louis Rams, Minnesota Vikings and Seattle Seahawks before announcing his decision.

In Dallas, Melton will be reunited with defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli, who coached him for three years with the Bears.
