Robert KraftVince Wilfork’s career with the New England Patriots might not be over after all.

Patriots owner Robert Kraft told reporters Monday at the NFL annual meeting that he is “still not giving up hope” Wilfork will be back in New England.

“(Wilfork) is one of my personal favorites,” Kraft said. “I surely hope Vince is with us next year.”

Wilfork reportedly asked the Patriots for his release earlier this month when the team asked him to restructure his contract. There’s still hope Wilfork could be back on a restructured deal if his agent doesn’t think he can find a better contract on the open market.

Releasing Wilfork would open up nearly $8 million in valuable salary-cap space for the Patriots. The team is getting low on cap space after signing cornerbacks Darrelle Revis and Brandon Browner and wide receivers Julian Edelman and Brandon LaFell.
