Carpenter emerged as one of the Cardinals’ best players last season, which also was his first as the starting third baseman. He batted .318 with 11 home runs, 78 RBI and a .392 on-base percentage in 157 games, while earning his first career All-Star selection.

Carpenter led the National League with 199 hits, 55 doubles and 126 runs.

The 28-year-old infielder struggled in the Cardinals’ run to the World Series last October, where they lost to the Boston Red Sox in six games. Carpenter batted just .217 with zero home runs and four RBI in 17 postseason games.
