Hoverboard dreams almost became a reality for “Back to the Future” fans on Wednesday, when a company called HUVr released a video of pro skateboarder Tony Hawk and wide receiver Terrell Owens riding a real-life version of Marty McFly’s floating skateboard.
Unfortunately, the hoverboard is still too good to be true. Hawk confirmed Thursday that the revolutionary technology in the video was all just a hoax.
Hawk created his own video to apologize for lying to so many hopeful fans.
“I thought it would be obvious that it was fake, but a lot of people believed it,” Hawk said. “So I’m sorry for misleading anyone. I wish as much as you do that hoverboards were real.”
HUVr may not have discovered the groundbreaking technology necessary to make skateboards defy gravity, but it did recruit several celebrities to promote its masterful illusion, including Christopher Lloyd, who played Doc Brown in the films.
“To me it was just a fun opportunity to ride a DeLorean with Doc and to actually ride on the stunt harness they used back in Back to the Future II,” Hawk said.
