The U.S. women’s national soccer team made the wrong kind of history recently.
The U.S. women, one of the soccer world’s great powers, are on their first losing streak in 13 years after falling to Sweden and Denmark at the Algarve Cup in Portugal.
The Americans lost 1-0 to Sweden on Friday. Former U.S. head coach Pia Sundhage masterminded Sweden’s victory, which ended a 43-game unbeaten streak (dating back two years) for the U.S. The Americans’ woes increased Monday when Denmark beat them 5-3.
Despite missing the services of injured star Alex Morgan, U.S. head coach Tom Sermanni has a strong squad at his disposal. Soccer by Ives claims a lack of chemistry and facing weak opponents before the tournament could be reasons for the Americans’ slide.
Monday’s defeat also marked the first time the U.S. has conceded five goals in a game in its 29-year history.
The last consecutive defeats also were at the Algarve Cup, in 2001, when Scandinavians Sweden and Norway beat the U.S.
The U.S. is last in Group B of the Algarve Cup. The Americans will look to break the infamous streak when they play North Korea for seventh place Wednesday.
