Boston College is close to adding another member to its men’s basketball coaching staff.
University of Maryland assistant coach Scott Spinelli is involved in “serious talks” for the assistant coach job at Boston College, Terrapins coach Mark Turgeon told The Washington Post on Monday.
Spinelli is a native of Leominster, Mass., and attended Boston University, where he played four seasons on the Terriers’ basketball team. Spinelli’s ties to the New England area are strong, as he helped bring local recruits Jake Layman (Wrentham, Mass.) and Evan Smotrycz (Reading, Mass.) to College Park to play for the Terrapins.
Boston College is hoping for a bounce-back year after finishing the 2013-14 season near the bottom of the Atlantic Coast Conference with an 8-24 record. The Eagles went 54-76 in four seasons under head coach Steve Donahue, who was fired March 18.
Former Ohio University coach Jim Christian was hired last week to replace Donahue.
