boston collegeBoston College has officially hired former University of Maryland assistant Scott Spinelli as a men’s basketball assistant coach, the school announced Monday.

The Boston University graduate’s move from College Park to Chestnut Hill comes after a round of “serious talks” between Spinelli and the Eagles athletic staff.

Spinelli has been on Mark Turgeon’s staff as an assistant head coach since the 2006-07 season with Wichita State. He then coached at Texas A&M before heading to the University of Maryland, where he coached under Turgeon for the past three seasons.

Spinelli will assist head coach Jim Christian, a former Ohio University coach who was recently hired to replace Jim Donahue. Donahue was fired on March 18 after the Eagles went 8-24 during the 2013-14 season.

“We are excited to have Scott join our basketball staff here at Boston College,” Christian said in a BC statement.

“He is an outstanding young coach, a proven recruiter and he has developed strong relationships in the New England area. Scott has had success everywhere he’s coached and he has a few important qualities I was looking for: the ability to recruit and coach at a high level, and to develop the student-athletes in our program.”

This might seem like a homecoming for Spinelli, as well, as he is a native of Leominster, Mass.
