The Hobey Baker Award committee selected Boston College forward Johnny Gaudreau on Wednesday as one the three “hat trick finalists” for college hockey’s highest honor.
Joining Gaudreau as finalists are St. Lawrence’s Greg Carey and St. Cloud State’s Nic Dowd, both senior forwards.
Gaudreau, a junior in his second consecutive season as a Hobey Baker finalist, remains the prohibitive favorite to win the award after leading the nation in all three scoring categories. His 77 points (35 goals, 42 assists) led Hockey East by a wide margin — linemate Kevin Hayes was second with 63 — and represents the fourth-highest single-season mark in BC history.
The Hockey East player of the year could still add to that total, as the Eagles take on No. 3 overall seed Union next Thursday in the Frozen Four.
The Hobey Baker Award winner will be announced Friday, April 11, in Philadelphia. No Boston College player has received the honor since Mike Mottau did so in 2000.
