chris herrenChris Herren, a former basketball star whose drug use sent his life spiraling out of control, has been sober for more than five and a half years and has become a prominent figure in combating drug use and providing help for addicts.

He also completed the Boston Marathon on Monday after having just 10 weeks to prepare.

“It was, no doubt, the toughest thing I’ve ever done in my life, athletically,” Herren told FOXSports.com.”Every part of your body hurts, and I had to fight myself the whole time. … But finishing is a beautiful thing.”

Herren ran to support The Herren Project, which raises awareness and provides assistance to drug addicts who want to begin the steps to recovery. The initiative also provides educational programs and resources in order to battle addiction and drug abuse.

“This is not about me running the Boston Marathon,” Mikolazyk said to FOXSports.com before the race. “We’re doing this so people who are struggling and people who are maybe newly sober can realize that you can do anything you want if you put your mind to it.”

Herren finished a little over the six-hour mark, with a time of 6:00:17.
