Matheson was the 23rd overall pick by the Florida Panthers in the 2012 NHL entry draft. The 6-foot-2 blueliner has been the leading scorer among Eagles defensemen for the past two seasons, and the Hockey East first-team all-star finished his sophomore season with three goals, 18 assists and a plus-18 rating.

“We are very excited Michael Matheson has decided to return to Boston College for his junior season,” York said in a statement released by the school. “Michael’s talents and leadership will play a significant role in developing the strong core Boston College hockey has in place for the future.”

Matheson’s 46 points (11 goals, 35 assists) make him BC’s leading scorer among returning players for next season.
