Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling will receive an award from the Los Angeles chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored people just days after controversy erupted surrounding racist remarks attributed to him.
The group has plans to honor Sterling, along with L.A. mayor Eric Garcetti and Rev. Al Shapton, at a May 15 banquet with a lifetime achievement award for work he’s done in the city of Los Angeles, according to For The Win.
On Saturday, audio was released of a purported conversation between Sterling and his girlfriend where he told the woman not to associate with or bring minorities, specifically Magic Johnson, to Clippers games.
Sterling has been honored by the NAACP at an inopportune time before, despite bungling a Black History Month celebration and allegedly embracing a “vision of a Southern plantation-type structure.” The organization presented him with another lifetime achievement award in 2009 , around the time that former general manager Elgin Baylor filed a lawsuit against Sterling for racial discrimination, according to the Los Angeles Times.
UPDATE: The NAACP said Sterling will not be getting the award.
