Tracy McGrady’s dreams of becoming a professional baseball player are coming true.
The ex-NBA star signed Wednesday to pitch for the Sugar Land Skeeters in the independent Atlantic League.
“It’s an honor to be a part of this club,” McGrady said in a statement released by the team, as reported by Fox Sports. “To be a part of the team means everything to me, and it’s a dream come true. I look forward to coming to the ballpark not only to play the game, but to be in the clubhouse building camaraderie with these guys. I am excited to start the journey we’re going to take this season.”
The 6-foot-8 right-hander made his debut for the Skeeters on April 16 in an exhibition game against Alvin Community College. McGrady allowed one run and three hits with no walks or strikeouts in one inning of pitching.
The Skeeters are an independent professional baseball team not associated with Major League Baseball. However, they are notable, as they signed former MLB ace Roger Clemens in 2012.
The 34-year-old McGrady spent 16 seasons in the NBA and was a seven-time All-Star. He expressed his interest in playing professional baseball a few months after he announced his retirement from the NBA this past August.
