Five years after coaching his last game in the NHL, Mike Keenan is a champion again.
Keenan, who won a Stanley Cup with the New York Rangers in 1994, added another title to his resume Wednesday, leading Metallurg Magnitogorsk to the Gagarin Cup as champions of the Kontinental Hockey League.
Metallurg clinched the title with a 7-4 win over Lev Prague in Game 7 of the Cup Final.
With the win, the 63-year-old Keenan became the first coach to win championships in both the NHL and the Russian KHL — widely regarded as the second-best hockey league in the world.
Keenan coached eight different teams during his two decades in the NHL, including one season behind the Boston Bruins’ bench in 2000-01. This season was his first in the KHL, and his Gagarin Cup was the first to be won by a non-Russian coach.
