BOSTON — It took three pitches for Jacoby Ellsbury’s return to Fenway Park to get messy for the Red Sox.

Ellsbury, who returned to Fenway on Tuesday for the first time as a member of the New York Yankees, drilled Jon Lester’s third pitch of the game to center field. The ball clanked off the wall, but not before a fan wearing a Boston Bruins jersey leaned over and interfered.

Ellsbury raced around the bases on the confusing play, which ended with a fan interference call. Typically, fan interference results in a double, but it’s really up to the umpires’ discretion. In this instance, Ellsbury was awarded a triple.

The Fenway Faithful greeted Ellsbury with mostly boos Tuesday, although some cheers entered the equation when a video tribute was shown on the big screen before the second inning. The Fenway boos will only get louder if Ellsbury keeps doing major damage against his former team.
