Jarome Iginla wasn’t on the ice for pregame warmups Wednesday night, and the assumption was that the Boston Bruins were giving their veteran winger some rest. Then came word that his absence from the game against the Detroit Red Wings actually was injury-related.

The exact nature of Iginla’s injury is unclear, but he was one of five Bruins players who didn’t practice Tuesday. Iginla did have a fight in the Bruins’ last game in Philadelphia, where he dropped the gloves with Flyers forward Zac Rinaldo.

Jordan Caron was inserted into the Bruins’ lineup in Iginla’s place and skated on the third line. Loui Eriksson moved up and took Iginla’s place as the first-line right wing.

This is the first game Iginla has missed all season. On Tuesday, he was named the NHL’s first star for the month of March, when he scored 13 goals in 17 games.
