The 42-year-old winger revealed on Tuesday he had a deal in place to return with the team for the 2014-15 season, and on Wednesday, the team made the news official.

“I think (Devils general manager) Lou Lamoriello wanted to know what kind of direction he wanted to go, so both sides wanted to do (the contract) quickly,” Jagr said on a conference call. “I didn’t mind that at all. I was happy here and had no reason to change. If I’m happy somewhere and feel like the other side is interested, there’s no reason to change.”

The Devils named Jagr the team’s most valuable player after leading New Jersey in in assists (43), points (67), plus-minus (plus-16) and game-winning goals (six). Jagr ranked second in goals with 24 on the season.

New Jersey did not release terms of the contract, but TVA Sports’ Renaud Lavoie reports the one-year deal is worth between $5 million and $6 million, depending on incentives.

The announcement of Jagr’s new contract also fell on the day that he was named one of three finalists for the 2014 Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy.
