It’s always scary when a pitcher takes a line drive to the head, which is why Major League Baseball approved a model of a special protective cap that was supposed to be available for the 2014 season.
When Cincinnati Reds closer Aroldis Chapman was struck in the head during spring training, Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Alex Cobb (who during the 2013 season also was hit with a line drive) complained that the caps, which are optional for pitchers to wear, weren’t actually available.
But it seems they now are.
Sportsnet reporter Barry Davis on Friday tweeted a picture of Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Todd Redmond wearing the new cap, and it’s a sight to see.

Davis mentions the pitchers he spoke to “aren’t fans,” but sometimes you have to sacrifice fashion for safety.
