Not so fast, Mr. Chapman.

The Los Angeles Lakers put an end to the quickly spreading rumor that University of Kentucky head coach John Calipari would take over the storied NBA franchise.

“I spoke to (general manager) Mitch Kupchak and he said the rumor is untrue,” Lakers vice president of public relations John Black told the Los Angeles Times on Monday. “Mike D’Antoni is our coach. There have been no conversations about any specific names for any replacement.”

The Calipari-to-L.A. rumors began when former Kentucky star Rex Chapman tweeted before the NCAA championship game Monday night that the coach’s move to the Lakers was a “done deal.”

Chapman seemed pretty sure about the potential news, following up with another tweet about the rumor.

Mike D’Antoni, the Lakers’ current coach, has struggled since coming to L.A. in 2012 and leads a team that is second-to-last in the Western Conference.

Unsurprisingly, Calipari didn’t tip his hand when asked about the rumors Monday.

“The Lakers have a basketball coach, Kentucky has a basketball coach,” Calipari said. “I have the best job in the country.”
