Anfield Main Stand expansion photo galleryLiverpool FC’s dream of playing home games in front of more fans inched closer to reality Wednesday, when the club unveiled artists’ renderings of an expanded Main Stand at Anfield.

The striking images show a three-tiered Main Stand, which will could add an additional 8,500 seats to the current Main Stand and increase Anfield’s capacity to to around 54,000.

The £100 million ($168 million) project will include a two-story podium in front of a wide public concourse outside of the stadium, which links Anfield to the surrounding neighborhood.

Liverpool will submit plans to the public for consultation this week. Input will be included in the club’s planning application, which it expects to submit to the city council this summer.

“We started this journey just over 18 months ago and a lot of work has already been done, there is still an incredible amount to do, but good progress has been made so far and we are proud to be able to unveil our plans,” Liverpool managing director Ian Ayre told LiverpoolFC.com.

If Liverpool receives permission, construction will begin in early 2015. The club hopes to complete the Main Stand project in time for the 2016-17 season.
