Louis van GaalAfter former Manchester United manager David Moyes was dismissed Tuesday, rumors were flying that Louis van Gaal would be hired in his stead.

Old Trafford sources told ESPN FC that the club was moving toward hiring Van Gaal, and Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf reported on Saturday that the hiring was a done deal.

The club released a statement denying those reports.

“We have not signed a new manager,” the statement said. “When we have something to report, we will announce it.”

Van Gaal coached Ajax, Barcelona and Bayern Munich and will coach the Netherlands at the 2014 FIFA World Cup this summer. He has also confirmed that he will return to club management when he returns from Brazil.

Manchester United is currently operating under interim manager Ryan Giggs. Moyes’ dismissal came with the club poised to finish seventh in the Premier League and having failed to qualify for next season’s UEFA Champions League.
