The controversy surrounding New York Yankees pitcher Michael Pineda and his use of pine tar is not about to go quietly into the night.
Especially in Boston.
Pineda was thrown out in the second inning of the Boston Red Sox’s 5-1 win Wednesday night after umpires discovered pine tar on his neck and was later suspended 10 games as a result.
U.S. Olympic women’s hockey forward Meghan Duggan, a native of Danvers, Mass., was asked to throw out the first pitch prior to Thursday night’s Red Sox-Yankees game and decided to have a little fun at Pineda’s expense. Check out the photo below, taken by USA Today’s Greg Cooper.
Duggan, who was part of a U.S. team that took home a silver medal at the 2014 Sochi Olympics, takes a not-so-subtle shot at the Yankees pitcher by touching her neck in the same spot where pine tar was discovered on Pineda.
Unfortunately for Sox fans, Duggan’s humorous gesture might have been the highlight of the night. Boston surrendered 14 hits and 12 walks to New York en route to a 14-5 loss.
