Friday’s Atlanta Braves-Washington Nationals game became one of the first to use the new replay system that’s available this season.
In the fifth inning, the Nationals’ Ian Desmond roped a liner down the third base line that ended up stopping underneath the padding against the wall in left field. Braves outfielder Justin Upton threw both his hands up to signal a ground-rule double, but Desmond kept running.
After Desmond crossed the plate for what initially looked to be an inside-the-park home run, Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez came out to argue the play.
The umpires convened to discuss it, then went to the replay system. After about a five-minute delay, the play was deemed a ground-rule double and Desmond was sent back to second base.
