Matt Moore’s season is officially over.
The Tampa Bay Rays pitcher will undergo season-ending Tommy John surgery on his left elbow for an injury he suffered in an April 7 outing against the Kansas City Royals, according to the Tampa Bay Times.
Moore left that contest in the fourth inning due to soreness in his pitching elbow and was placed on the 15-day disabled list just two days later.
The 24-year-old left-hander represents yet another big loss to the Rays pitching staff this season, which many considered to be among the MLB’s best at the beginning of the season. Moore had an All-Star season in 2013, posting a 17-4 record with a 3.29 ERA despite missing a full month with elbow soreness.
The Rays are also without right-hander Alex Cobb, who could miss four to six weeks with an oblique strain, and Jeremy Hellickson, who underwent elbow surgery in the offseason and is not expected back until June.
Moore will be in capable hands for his surgery, as renowned surgeon Dr. James Andrews will perform the operation. The surgery is set for April 22, and the rehab process is expected to last 11-15 months.
