It appears Darrelle Revis will wear No. 24 for the New England Patriots.

The team informed veteran safety Adrian Wilson of his release Friday, ESPN.com’s Mike Reiss reported and the team later confirmed. Wilson acquired No. 24 from Kyle Arrington during the 2013 offseason by buying the cornerback a year’s supply of diapers.

Wilson said farewell to the Patriots on Twitter.

The Patriots signed Wilson to a three-year contract last March, but he missed the 2013 season with an Achilles injury. Wilson has tweeted updates on his recovery from surgery.

The Patriots re-signed safety Patrick Chung, who provides more special-teams value, on Thursday, likely leading to Wilson’s release. Wilson, a three-time All-Pro and five-time Pro Bowl pick, spent 12 seasons with the Arizona Cardinals before signing with the Patriots.

Wilson’s release leaves the Patriots with Chung, Devin McCourty, Duron Harmon, Tavon Wilson, Nate Ebner and Kanorris Davis at safety. The Patriots also reportedly have considered moving cornerback Logan Ryan to safety. The Patriots could add another safety in the 2014 NFL draft.
