Magic JohnsonThe Los Angeles Clippers aren’t officially up for sale yet, but NBA legend Magic Johnson is interested in buying the franchise if it becomes available, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports.

Current Clippers owner Donald Sterling is at the center of a controversy surrounding racially charged comments that he allegedly made in a private conversation with his girlfriend, and the NBA is expected to make a decision on sanctions in the coming days. In the event that commissioner Adam Silver and the league force Sterling to sell the team, Johnson and his billionaire backers are “absolutely interested” in buying it, according to Wojnarowski, citing an unnamed source.

Johnson, in conjunction with the Guggenheim Partners, owns the Los Angeles Dodgers, and, according to Wojnarowski’s sources, the former Lakers star is looking for a Southern California sports takeover.

“This is 100 percent Magic’s plan,” a league official closely involved in the buying and selling of franchises told Yahoo! Sports.

Sterling’s alleged rant against minorities stemmed from a photo that his girlfriend, V. Stiviano, posted on Instagram of herself with Johnson.
