Kansas City Royals second baseman Omar Infante was hit in the face by an 89-mph pitch by Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Heath Bell on Monday night.

Infante needed six stitches but did not suffer a concussion or a broken jaw, MLB.com reported Tuesday. His right jaw is sprained, however, and he’ll be evaluated over the next 48 hours.

“I think he’s going to be OK,” Royals’ manager Ned Yost told MLB.com. “We’re just going to have to have to take a little bit of time with him. He could hardly talk last night, he couldn’t even open his jaw, and that’s what made me nervous, but it’ll be OK.”

As for Bell, he considers Infante a friend and is glad he’s OK.

“I feel like my prayers from the mound and after the game did him some good,” Bell told the Tampa Bay Times.
