Manchester United turned inward on Tuesday when it appointed Ryan Giggs as its new manager.
Manchester United fired David Moyes Tuesday morning and handed the reigns to club legend and player-coach Giggs.
Giggs, 40, will lead the Red Devils in their final four games of the 2013-14 season, starting with Saturday’s home game against Norwich City.
However, Giggs isn’t among the potential candidates to take over on a permanent basis, according to the BBC.
“But the Premier League club feels an experienced manager is needed to turn things round after this season’s slump.”
Netherlands head coach Louis van Gaal is thought to be the leading contender to take over as manager after the season. Paris Saint-Germain head coach Laurent Blanc and Real Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti are also believed to be in the running.
Giggs has spent his entire career at Manchester United, amassing 13 Premier League titles and host of accolades. The Welshman joined Moyes’ staff last summer, but reports of his discontent with Moyes’ approached emerged in early 2014. Giggs reportedly was considering retiring and leaving Manchester United all together, but recent events prompted him to reverse his stance.
