Shabazz Napier Calls Out NCAA After UConn Wins National Title (Video)

UConn senior guard Shabazz Napier celebrated a national basketball championship with his Huskies teammates Monday night. But first, he had a message for the NCAA.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” Napier proclaimed to the AT&T Stadium crowd after being announced as the Final Four’s Most Outstanding Player, “you’re looking at the hungry Huskies. This is what happens when you ban us.”

The ban Napier referred to was what the NCAA handed down in 2012 as a result of the basketball team’s poor academic performance — a punishment that barred the Huskies from postseason play last season.

Interestingly, the postgame mini-rant marked the second time during the tournament that Napier made headlines for comments about being “hungry.”

The senior told reporters last week that he sometimes goes to bed “starving” while the university rakes in money off sales of his jersey. Those remarks are now getting Connecticut lawmakers to consider allowing student-athletes to unionize.
