It’s fine to use one road flare during an emergency or a celebration. A few of them can be a nuisance. Lighting several hundreds or even thousands is awesome, as the soccer world discovered Wednesday.

Fans of home team A.S. PAOK Thessalonki delayed the start of their team’s Greek Cup semifinal against Olympiakos by creating a ring of fire at PAOK’s Toumba Stadium.

As the teams walked onto the field, PAOK fans lit scores of red- and orange-colored road flares, creating a stunning spectacle.

Large plumes of smoke soon overtook the stadium, making it impossible to start the game on time. Correction: The smoke and the fish with which the PAOK fans pelted the Olympiacos bench delayed the start of the game.

The game eventually started, and PAOK used their fans’ energy to win 1-0 and advance to the final.
