Life as a major league relief pitcher can be cruel sometimes.
Boston Red Sox reliever Brandon Workman was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket after Tuesday night’s 10-7 loss to the Texas Rangers despite a valiant relief effort in which he allowed just two hits and one run over the game’s final four innings.
NESN analyst Steve Lyons lauded Workman for his, well, workman-like effort in Wednesday’s edition of “Red Sox First Pitch.”
“I feel really bad for Workman, though, because he did not deserve to get sent down,” Lyons said. “He wore one for the team last night, going deep into that ballgame just to save everyone else.”
