Tim Howard, who recently signed a two-year extension with Everton that will keep him playing after he turns 39, told ESPNFC.com that he will retire after the contract expires.
“I’ll be on a beach somewhere when I’m 40,” Howard said. “I would pretty much take it to the bank that I won’t be playing past 40. There are other things I want to achieve in life, other things that I want to do.”
Howard, who is expected to be the starting goalkeeper for the U.S. team in the 2014 FIFA World Cup this summer in Brazil, could opt for a front-office position with a soccer club, either in the MLS or where he currently plays in England.
One person who will be disappointed is Everton’s manager Roberto Martinez, who believed Howard would play into his 40s when he signed his most recent contract extension.
