BOSTON — The Red Sox turned everyone’s scorecards into a complete mess Saturday before a single pitch was thrown.
The Red Sox made two lineup changes — at different times — just minutes before their game against the Milwaukee Brewers at Fenway Park. Mike Carp and Will Middlebrooks both were scratched because of physical ailments.
Carp, who was scheduled to play first base and bat sixth, was scratched because of low back tightness. Jonny Gomes was inserted into the lineup in left field, while Daniel Nava — originally penciled in as the left fielder — shifted to first base. Nava remained in the No. 3 spot in Boston’s order, and Mike Napoli still served as the Red Sox’s designated hitter and batted cleanup.
Middlebrooks, who was scheduled to play third base and bat eighth, was scratched because of a right calf cramp. Jonathan Herrera took his spot both in the field and in Boston’s order.
This all came after much already was made about the Red Sox’s initial lineup. David Ortiz, who has been dealing with a calf issue, was given a planned day off and Grady Sizemore was moved up into the leadoff spot.
