The New York Yankees aren’t ready to make any knee-jerk reactions in light of some recent injuries.
The Yankees’ infield is banged up, but owner Hal Steinbrenner suggested Tuesday that they won’t sign free-agent shortstop Stephen Drew any time soon.
“I’m pretty content with our infield right now,” Steinbrenner told reporters Tuesday in New York. “I think guys like (Dean) Anna and (Yangervis) Solarte have been pleasant surprises. Kelly Johnson has been good. Derek (Jeter) is healthy. So so far, so good. But it’s early.”
Jeter missed two games against the Boston Red Sox over the weekend because of tightness in his quadriceps. Brian Roberts missed Sunday’s game because of a sore back. Mark Teixeira has been on the disabled list since April 5 because of a hamstring strain. Brendan Ryan has been sidelined all season because of a cervical spine nerve injury. All those ailments have forced Yankees manager Joe Girardi to shuffle his lineup, and it sounds like he won’t soon receive any new players.
“So far, I’m pretty content with where we are,” Steinbrenner said. “But I will always analyze options. That’s my job throughout the course of the whole year.”
A source familiar with the Yankees’ thinking told ESPN.com on Monday that there was “no way” New York would sign Drew, so Steinbrenner’s comments certainly help validate that report.
