Liverpool FC made its first, and perhaps most important, personnel move of the summer Monday when it signed manager Brendan Rodgers to a new long-term contract.
Rodgers’ new deal replaces his old one, which was to expire after the 2014-15 season. Rodgers’ new contract runs until 2018, according to multiple reports. It also reportedly includes a raise, which recognizes the outstanding progress Liverpool has made under his stewardship since June 2012.
Having secured his future, Rodgers already is busy preparing Liverpool for another Premier League title challenge and UEFA Champions League soccer in 2014-15.
“I am both humbled and privileged to be offered the chance to extend my stay at this great club,” Rodgers said, according to LiverpoolFC.com. “I am very happy to build on the foundations we have built over the last two years, and now we move onto the next phase, which I believe will be as exciting, challenging and rewarding.
“I would like to place on record my thanks to the players and staff, who have been absolutely brilliant for me since the day I started at this great football club. I am grateful to our owners and senior management team who have supported me and who share my vision of how we can progress on the field.
“Finally, I must thank the supporters, who are at the heart of everything we do here. I am honored every day to lead this team, and I thank the fans for their continued support as together we strive to bring success back to Liverpool Football Club.”
Rodgers, 41, won the League Managers’ Association’s Manager Of The Year Award earlier this month after orchestrating Liverpool’s Premier League rise from seventh place in 2012-13 to second place last season.
