Red Sox fans should prepare to see David Ortiz like they’ve never seen him before.

Premium entertainment network EPIX announced Friday that a documentary called, “David Ortiz In the Moment,” has been produced by Relativity Sports in conjunction with Major League Baseball Productions. The special, which traces Ortiz’s path from the Dominican Republic to global stardom, is scheduled to make its world television premiere Thursday, July 17, at 8 p.m. ET.

“David Ortiz is a larger-than-life baseball star,” EPIX CEO and president Mark Greenberg said, according to a press release. “From his leadership role helping guide the Red Sox to win three World Series titles to his civic work in the U.S. and the Dominican Republic to the compassionate, funny and empathetic way he embraced and comforted Bostonians and all of America following last year’s Boston Marathon bombing, he is a true inspiration.”

The documentary follows Ortiz over the last two years, giving an up-close look at Big Papi’s role in the Red Sox’s return to championship glory and Boston’s rebound effort following last April’s marathon tragedy. Ortiz is the latest sports figure profiled in EPIX’s “In the Moment” series, which has featured Lindsey Vonn and Amar’e Stoudemire and will continue with “Dwight Howard In the Moment” set to premiere this fall.
